Born in Paris, France, pianist Jacques Chanier began his career as a
pop/rock musician in his early teens, in the south of France. In 1979,
he came to the United States, where he spent four years studying jazz,
classical composing, and arranging at the Berklee College of Music. After
that he went on to study jazz improvisation with Charlie Banacos.
Ever since, he has been an active member of the Boston jazz scene. In
1995, he recorded with the Henry Cook Band (featuring drummer Bobby Ward).
This CD (Accurate 5012) won the Boston Music Awards for that year's Best
Jazz Recording. They have since played at the Boston Globe Jazz Festival
and at the 4th Festival Internacional at San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.
In 1998, he recorded live at the Ford Montreux Detroit Jazz Festival with
the same band (Accurate AC-5036).
In August 1999, he produced his first CD Kite Flight (LaRondeMusic 001),
which received high praises from magazines such as Down Beat, Cadence
and many others. They recorded live on Eric in the Evening (WGBH radio,
10/9/01).
In 2002, Jacques played on Brooke Sofferman’s CD The Green Between
(SUMMIT records-DCD 323) featuring Jerry Bergonzi.
Soon after, Accurate Records released Jacques's second CD, Quilt (AC-5051).
The CD is now available everywhere in the US, France, Italy, England,
and Ireland. Quilt was also very well received on radio and was nominated
for the Boston Music Awards in the Best Jazz Recording Category.
On February 2007, Jacques self produced Access Renewed. This double CD
set was recorded in front of a live audience as a duo: Jeff Galindo on
Trombone and Jacques on Piano. The CD was released at the Lily Pad on
Saturday, June 16. Jacques was also interviewed on Eric in the Evening
(WGBH radio) on Thursday, August 2, and on Java Jazz with Ken Irwin (WMUA
91.1) on Wednesday August 15. Access Renewed as received a lot of radio
play in Chicago, Maine, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Canada, as well
as other places.
In May 2007, Jacques recorded with Henry Cook for an upcoming CD. The
band includes Henry Cook on sax and flute, Bobby Ward on drums, Frank
Lacy on trombone, and Steve Neil on bass. Currently in production, the
CD has an anticipated 2008 release date.
